Often referred to as the 'Hunt Ball', the annual charity ball organised by the supporters of Plas Machynlleth Hounds, (which long since have had nothing to do with Y Plas), took place in the events hall at Y Plas on Saturday 2 January 2010 and was declared a total success.
Of course, even 'total successes' suffer the odd glitch, but those which occurred on the night were minor in nature, were quickly resolved and did nothing to detract from the enjoyment of the 170 or so guests in attendance. As a first go at anything on this scale, both the event organisers and the Plas management were extremely happy with the result.
The association with foxhunting had caused one or two letters of dissent to be penned to Plas manager Bob Dunn, and the band originally booked for the event chose not fulfil their commitment on ethical grounds. However, mindful of the opinions of everyone, Bob had done as much checking as he could to satisfy himself that this group were in strict compliance with the law on foxhunting. As bob said, "I would not block a potential client from hiring the facility because they were in favour of fox hunting, anymore than I would prevent those from the anti-hunting lobby from hiring it. As long as those on either side of the arguement remain within the law, then all sides should be thankful that our democratic system of government allows us to hold and express our opinions without fear of persecution. On the night, I never heard the words 'fox' or 'hunt' at all. What I did hear was the delight of the organisers over the amount of charitable money they expected to pay out after the calculations were all done."
